Athens Poetry Walk: Routes of Memory and Words
Panathenaic StadiumHomo Ludens, with Nikos Mathioudakis as coordinator and guide, presents Athens Poetry Walk: Routes of Memory and Words, a hybrid cultural intervention that reintroduces the urban landscape of Athens through the lens of poetry.
Taking place within the framework of the European Heritage Days 2026, and centred around the digital application Athens Poetry Walk, this new initiative seeks to “revive” landmarks of the city that risk being stripped of their meaning amid the fast pace of everyday life.
More specifically, the project enriches the digital walking experience through live interventions and poetry readings. The experience acquires “body” and “voice” through new points of interest that connect the city’s historical fabric with contemporary poetic creation. Distinguished guests from the academic, literary and artistic fields will perform poetry readings alongside selected urban landmarks, transforming the route into an immersive experience of reflection.
The Route:
- Meeting Point: Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)
Arrival time: 11:30 - 1st Stop: “The House of Seferis” (20 Agras Street, Athens 116 36)
- Route: Walk along Dionysiou Areopagitou Street
- 2nd Stop: C. P. Cavafy Statue, followed by a visit to the Cavafy Archive (16B Frynichou Street, Athens 105 58)
- Route: Walk through the historic streets of Plaka
- 3rd Stop: Museum – “The House of Elytis” (4 Dioskouron Street and Polygnoto Street, Athens 105 55)
By harmoniously combining digital technology with the immediacy of the spoken word, Athens Poetry Walk proposes a contemporary approach to engaging with and interpreting our cultural heritage through an original site-specific experience.
This flexible and outward-looking initiative invites the public to “read” Athens with fresh eyes. Join us in discovering poetry as a refuge of resilience and in rediscovering the city as a living, open laboratory of culture.
After the completion of the event, the experience can continue digitally through the Athens Poetry Walk application, giving participants the opportunity to revisit the poetic geography of Athens, discover additional points of interest and explore the city through new poetic routes.
